Peak season:
The weather is lovely and warm from around March to October although the brunt of tourism hits Greece around June to August. You’ll have to secure your flights to Greece in advance if you plan to visit during the summer to avoid overpaying more than you need too. March to June and late August to October normally offer cheap flights to Greece but you’ll have a lot less tourists around. Most resorts and attractions are open but you’ll be able to secure deals at cheaper rates. Off season:
You’ll find the cheapest flights to Greece from around October until April. Most things related to tourism are also closed then too. Athens generally has more going on this time of year but the rest of the country can be a bit dull and you’ll struggle with things to do. That said you’ll find everything is cheaper and you can grab bargains on your flight tickets.
Aim to book your flights to Greece two or three months in advance especially during the peak season. School holidays also increase the cost of flight tickets quite a lot so you’ll need to either avoid them or secure flights to Greece early on. Whilst the off season can provide bargains and the cheapest flights to Greece can be found then, there is so little going on you’ll struggle to keep yourself entertained, or even eat in some places as restaurants close for the winter. Athens airport:
The airport is around 33km from the centre and there are a few options to help you get into the get there once your flights to Greece land. The easiest way would be to check if your hotel provides airport transfers, or better yet once you’ve booked cheap flights to Greece, look specifically for hotels that offer such a service. You can also opt to take a taxi from outside of the arrivals Terminal. Make sure you agree on a fee as you can be overcharged, however they sometimes overcharge you anyway. If you book a taxi online in advance you can avoid this kind of problem. There are also many buses you can find to both the city and to the metro station.
Heraklion airport:
Your options are slightly more limited at the Heraklion airport but it is still rather easy to find your way to the centre. Again it is worth booking a hotel which provides airport transfers in with the price as this will save you time and money. Taxis are an option but they are so expensive in Greece that they should be a last case option. Public buses run for the best part of the day and take about 20 minutes to take you to the city.
Corfu airport:
The airport is only 3km away from the city so one option if you don’t have loads of luggage is to walk it. It’ll take you a good 30-40 minutes but if you’re sporty it shouldn’t be an issue. Failing that you can take either bus number 5 or 6 straight to the city and that takes about 10 minutes. There is also a taxi rank outside of the airport however the costs are high compared to the bus.
